ORGANIST:

Hilton United Methodist Church, 21 West Avenue, Hilton, NY, 14468, seeks an individual to fill the organist position. Basic Requirements:

The organist shall be able to play the organ, piano and the keyboard with a moderate degree of proficiency.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Select, prepare and perform service music for Sunday morning worship.   
  2. Play up to 5 special services (e.g. Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, Lent).
  3. Accompany the adult choir and soloists during rehearsals and worship services.
  4. Coordinate with others, as appropriate, with the planning and conducting of worship music.
  5. In writing, promptly report any problems with the organ or piano to the Trustees.
  6. Adhere to all church policies, including the Safe Sanctuary Policy and Vacation/Absence Policy.
  7. Notify SPR of any compliance issues with any church policies.
  8. Work with SPR to find a substitute organist when unable to attend a worship service due to vacation, sickness or personal leave.

Audition Requirements:

The primary focus of the audition is to demonstrate proficiency on piano, to accompany Choir for anthems of different styles, and to perform service music such as for Offertory.  At a minimum, the ability to play organ for congregational hymns is also expected.  Further organ proficiency is a plus.

Perform a 3-minute piece appropriate for Prelude, Offertory, or Postlude – hymn arrangement or suitable piece from classical/baroque literature – may be played on either piano or organ.

Attend Choir rehearsal (Wednesday evening) and accompany Choir on one piece provided in advance and one piece provided at the audition (to demonstrate sight-reading abilities).

Demonstrate organ proficiency by playing a hymn from the standard United Methodist Church Hymnal that is suitable for congregational singing.

ORGANIST/ CHOIR DIRECTOR:

Seneca Falls First United Methodist Church, 2 Chapel St., in Seneca Falls is accepting applications for the position of organist/choir director, effective Sept. 1, 2010.


Our music program is generally more traditionally oriented e.g.: prelude, offertory, postlude, choral anthem,  three hymns  including a hymn each week from the contemporary hymnal, though we are always open to new ideas.


Responsibilities include accompanying one weekly Sunday worship service; directing Senior Choir; conducting one weekly choir rehearsal (there are no choir rehearsals during the summer months); planning music for special services such as Christmas Eve and Maundy Thursday; and newly-formed youth choir (performance frequency negotiable).


Our church band and bell choirs have separate directors. We have a new Yamaha grand piano in the sanctuary. Vacation weeks off are negotiable to your needs. Proficiency in organ and piano necessary, academic degree not required.

KEY ACTIVITIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Present high quality organ artistry at worship services two Sundays each month for a church that offers musically rich services in the classic sacred choral and organ tradition.  Congregation uses the Presbyterian Hymnal.  Holtkamp organ III/34.

- Will accompany rehearsal once monthly with Thursday evening adult choir.

- Direct and be rehearsal accompanist twice a month for either the Sunday afternoon SAB teen choir (grades 8 – 12) for 1.25 hour or the Wednesday evening children’s choirs (grades 2-4 and 5-7) that meet consecutivey for a total of 1.75 hour.  Each group consists of approximately seven hard-working choiristers, who sing a mix of sacred choral literature.

- Attend weekly Wednesday morning staff meetings (1 hour).

This is a part-time position that begins on September 9, 2010. Mid-September through May -  two services, 8:45A.M. and 11:00A.M., June through August  - one service, 10:00A.M.

QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING:

- High competency in church organ
- Some experience with choral directing is preferred Bachelor’s degree in music (or in progress) is desirable

EXPERIENCE:

Experience as a church organist and/or familiarity with liturgical worship are desired but are not requirements Experience as a choral accompanist and reading SATB scores Relates well with children and adults Ability to function as a team player in a church setting working with staff, musicians and volunteers

COMPENSATION:

- Two paid vacation Sundays allowed per year.
- 28 hours per month at $20.83 per hour (not to exceed $7,000 per year)

ACTING MUSIC DIRECTOR:
